SOUTHEND United’s youth team chief Ricky Duncan felt his side fully deserved their 2-1 win at Newport County in the second round of the FA Youth Cup tonight.

Blues came back from conceding an early goal to triumph in extra time with Norman Wabo on target before Harry Phillips netted a match winning penalty.

And Duncan thought the final score-line was a fair reflection of the game.

“I felt as though we dominated the game and certainly deserved the win,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“We came in 1-0 down at half-time but told the lads there was no need to panic.

“We knew we had what it took to get back into the game and switching to a diamond midway through the second half really helped us.

“We made hard work of it but we had too much in the locker for them in the end and showed good resolve to come back like we did so I’m really pleased.”

Southend will now head to Blackburn Rovers in the third round but that did not look likely early on when Newport went in front after just eight minutes with Connah Hughes on target.

In reply, Blues’ top goalscorer Dan Walker fired over from 20 yards before Renei Batlokwa was denied by Newport’s goalkeeper Rhys Davies at the start of the second half.

However, the Shrimpers drew back level in the 66th minute when Batlokwa set Wabo through on goal and the striker made no mistake with an assured finish.

That took the tie to extra time and, in the 103rd minute, Phillips held his nerve to fire home a penalty after Elvis Bwomono had been brought down in the box by Davies.

Blues will now travel to Ewood Park in a tie which must take place before Saturday December 12.

But Duncan insists Southend will have their sights set on causing an upset.

“We aren’t going there for a day out or to make up the numbers,” stressed the Shrimpers coach.

“We’re going there looking to cause an upset.”
