SOUTHEND United star Jack Payne insists contract talks with the Shrimpers remain on track.

The attacking midfielder, who has scored four goals in his last 11 games, is currently in discussions with the League One club about a new deal.

And Payne insists he would be happy to stay at Roots Hall.

“Everything is going to plan as far as the contract talks are concerned,” said the 21-year-old, whose current deal expires at the end of the season.

“I know there was a bit of a panic when the manager said talks had stalled but I think everything is still on track.

“I’m not really thinking about it too much if I’m honest because I just want to focus on my football and making sure I’m playing well.

“But I’m in the team at the moment and whenever that’s the case then I’m happy to be here.”

Payne came through the youth ranks at Roots Hall and has re-established himself as a regular in the starting line-up.

The midfielder has started 12 of the Shrimpers’ last 13 matches.

And he is relishing his new role playing just behind Tyrone Barnett in attack.

“I’m playing as one of the two strikers and that’s where I love to be,” said Payne.

“Tyrone has started on fire with us scoring three goals in three games but he also stretches the play which gives me more space on the ball.

“It’s been going well and I’ve got more of a license to also peel off and drop off just like I want to do.

““I’ve got a few goals now too but that’s what I have to be doing to make sure I stay in the side.”

Payne again caught the eye for Blues against Coventry City on Saturday.

And he was thrilled to bag Phil Brown’s side’s first goal in a convincing 3-0 victory.

“Coventry are one of the top sides in the league so to beat them like we did was really encouraging,” said Payne.

“It was really good to get another goal too.

“The ball broke to me and their defence showed me onto my left foot which I was really happy with.

“It was great to see it go in and hopefully I can start to chip in with a few more now.”
