SOUTHEND United’s on loan left-back Stephen Hendrie confessed to having no idea how to celebrate his winning goal against Shrewsbury Town.

The Scotsman thundered home Jamar Laza’s right wing cross to secure the 10 man Shrimpers all three points at Greenhous Meadow on Tuesday night.

But, having never scored in his previous 119 games, Hendrie did not know what to do when the ball hit the back of the net.

“It was my first ever league goal and being honest I had no idea what to do when it went in,” said the 21-year-old.

“Jamar has that bit of pace which opens things up for us and I knew he was going to put the ball across the face of goal.

“If he does that and I’m not there then that’s my fault but I was originally heading for the near post.

“Thankfully I decided to check my run and I was buzzing when I saw the ball was coming straight to me because I knew I was going to score.”

Hendrie’s goal came after Michael Timlin had been sent off for the Shrimpers.

But the on loan West Ham United defender never gave up hope of coming back to win the game.

“Going down to 10 men we had to make sure we kept our shape and discipline which is what we did,” said Hendrie.

“The boys really dug in and we were still able to get the three points which have really pushed us on.

“A draw would’ve kept us middle of the table which we didn’t want and it’s an important win for us too.”

The hard fought triumph continued Hendrie’s fine start to his loan spell with the Shrimpers.

But the defender is determined to not get carried away.

“It’s been going well for me so far but I don’t want to say too much because it’s only been three games,” said Hendrie.

“I just want to keep my feet on the ground and keep trying to do well.

“We have Colchester on Saturday and that’s a massive game for us.

“It will be my first derby with the club and I can’t wait to get out there to try and get the three points.”

The game again looks set to be played in cold conditions.

But Hendrie joked the freezing weather could actually have worked in his favour at Shrewsbury.

“I’m used to this weather so that probably helped me as well,” laughed the Glasgow born defender.

“This actually feels like summer to me!”
