SOUTHEND United’s Adam Barrett does not feel it will be necessary to stress the importance of tomorrow’s Essex derby to his team-mates.

Centre-back Barrett and goalkeeper Daniel Bentley are likely to be the only local players in Blues’ starting line-up for the clash against Colchester at Roots Hall.

But Barrett believes the entire squad already realise the significance of Saturday’s encounter.

“Every one of the lads realise how important this game is,” said the Benfleet based defender.

“Whether they’re from this area or not I don’t think it makes a difference.

“They will have rivalries wherever they’re from and they will sense it too, especially as some of them live in the area too.

“They will see the passion of the fans but we can’t get caught up in the emotion of it all, we have to just focus on the game.”

Seventh placed Blues head into the game unbeaten in their last three games.

And Barrett would love to continue the good run of results in what could well prove to be his last ever Essex derby.

“The last three games have been really good and we’re back on track again now but we have to keep it going, starting with the game tomorrow,” said the 36-year-old.

“I always look forward to the Colchester games and this one is no different.

“No doubt a bit of stick will be coming my way again but it’s a great game for us all to be involved in.

“The ground will be rocking and the fans will take more pleasure in beating Colchester than anyone else and I totally understand how they feel.

“I grew up with the rivalry and nobody needs to tell me how important this game is and what it means to people.”

In stark contrast to the Shrimpers, Colchester are struggling to find their best form and currently sit bottom of the League One standings.

But Barrett will not be taking three points for granted this weekend.

“Colchester are coming here to get one over on us after we beat them on Boxing Day and they will also be fired up,” said the defender.

“We certainly can’t read too much into their league position but if we apply ourselves right then we have the ability to get the right result.”
