SOUTHEND United are to activate a clause in Adam Thompson’s contract to keep the centre-back at Roots Hall for another season.

The 23-year-old defender, who looks start to start for the Shrimpers at home to Oldham Athletic tonight, has been a regular in the Blues back four since recovering from a shoulder injury in November.

And Southend boss Phil Brown is keen for Thompson to stay.

“I want to get Tommo’s future sorted and we’ve spoken to his connections about it,” said the Blues chief.

“I think it’s only a matter of time now before it gets sorted out.”

Thompson has made 24 starts for the Shrimpers this season.

And the defender, who has been with Southend since the start of the 2013/14 campaign, now also expects to still be with Blues next term.

“The club have a year option on me and I think that will be taken up,” said Thompson.

“They’ve spoken to me about that and I’m very happy to stay.

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

Echosport also understands talks have taken place to hand Thompson a deal beyond the end of next season.
