SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown leapt to the defence of Jack Payne following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Oldham Athletic.

Payne gave the ball away in the build up to the Latics’ winner in the second half.

But Brown felt Payne was not to blame for the defeat, despite the youngster’s disappointment at the final whistle.

“Jack Payne was nearly in tears in there after giving the ball away near the half-way line before their goal,” said Brown.

“We still had bodies behind him and never in a million years would I blame Jack Payne for their goal.

“When Payney gives it away it’s in the pursuit of trying to open the back door but unfortunately it opened the back door for them.

“Consequently the ball ended up in the back of the net but I won’t criticise him.

“He’s been a revelation and he’s been outstanding for us.

“He’s caused more problems for the opposition than he has for me that’s for sure.”
