TED Smith insists he is ready to replace Daniel Bentley as Southend United’s first choice goalkeeper.

Bentley looks certain to leave the Shrimpers at the end of the season.

And Smith, who started Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to Bradford City, is keen to replace him between the sticks.

“Working with Dan has been an honour because he’s a brilliant keeper who deserves everything he gets but I need to fill his shoes if he does go,” said the 20-year-old shot-stopper.

“I feel like I’m more than capable of being able to do that and that I’ll be more than ready to step in next year.”

Smith also started Blues’ previous game – a 4-1 defeat at Wigan Athletic.

And the youngster is pleased to have been handed an opportunity to impress.

“For me it’s about getting as many games as I can so I was delighted to play but of course the result was disappointing,” said Smith, who came through the Shrimpers’ youth system.

We weren’t at the races against Wigan but we showed a lot of fight here and it was a big improvement.

“It was frustrating to lose and I thought we did enough to pick up a point if I’m honest.”

Blues now complete their season with a trip to Bury this weekend before attention turns towards the next campaign.

But Smith believes League One will be even tougher next term.

“It could well be even harder next year with the teams coming up from League Two and those coming down from the Championship,” said the former King John School pupil.

“It’s going to be tough but I think we have players that can more than step up to the plate.

“I’m really looking forward to it and hope to be able to show what I can do as well.

“It’s just a shame we have to wait so long because it kills the buzz!”
