KEVAN Hurst insists he is leaving Southend United with nothing but good memories.

The 30-year-old winger, who had been at Roots Hall since 2012, has not been offered a new deal by Blues boss Phil Brown.

But Hurst revealed he would always look back on his four year spell at the Shrimpers with great fondness.

“The time at Southend has been the best of my career without any doubt,” said Hurst.

“I’ve met some amazing people here who will now be friends for life and the club has been moving forward too.

“I wasn’t involved in the play-off final with Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley but being part of the squad was still fantastic that day and there were plenty of other good memories too.

“The (2013/14) season I scored 12 goals and had even more assists was a high but even when I wasn’t playing regularly towards the end it was still a great place to be every day.

“The fans have always been fantastic towards me and I want to thank them for that.

“I also want to thank all the staff, not just the management and the coaching team, but the people behind the scenes who make the club tick and probably don’t get as much gratitude as they should.”

Hurst bagged 19 goals in 151 games for Blues but struggled to hold down a regular slot last season.

He made just start 11 starts in League One and was therefore not surprised to not be offered a new deal.

“I’m not stupid and common sense told me I wouldn’t be getting offered anything,” said Hurst.

“I still feel as though I played quite well when called upon but I couldn’t cement a place in the side.

“I knew I wouldn’t get a contract and while it’s disappointing news I really wish Southend all the success in the world.

“I can honestly say that I love the club and always will as well.”

Hurst will now allow himself a short two week break before returning to the gym.

He will then also start looking to find himself a new club which he fears could be far from straightforward.

“I’ll start training again soon and football is a scary game at times like this,” said the winger.

“There are so many good players looking for clubs that it’s frightening.

“But I still have a lot more to offer and hope to be able to get something sorted out.”

Blues boss Brown remains in talks with the rest of his squad and will not yet reveal who else will be released.

However, he was keen to thank Hurst for his efforts.

“Kevan is a great guy and a great professional who has been a really good servant to the football club,” said Brown.

“We thank him for everything he has done during his time here and I really do wish him all the very best for the future.

“He leaves with our very best wishes.”
