FORMER Barnet shot-stopper Lee Harrison is in line to become Southend United’s new full-time goalkeeping coach.

Harrison has been recommended to Blues boss Phil Brown by his former goalkeeper at Bolton Wanderers, Jussi Jaaskelainen, who worked with the 44-year-old when at West Ham United.

And Echosports understands Brown has now held talks with Harrison about bringing him to Blues.

Harrison, who works with the young goalkeepers at West Ham United, had also been coaching at Leyton Orient until the end of last season.

But he could now be bringing his wealth of experience to the Shrimpers.

The Billericay born Harrison made more than 450 appearances during his own playing career and is now also highly regarded as a coach.

That has caught the eye of Brown who is keen to revamp the goalkeeping coaching at Blues before the start of next season.

Current coach Terry Mason is unable to take the position full-time and will instead be working with the club’s encouraging youngsters in the academy.

That could enable Harrison – who is based in Rayleigh – to begin coaching at Blues where he would work closely alongside England under 20 international Ted Smith who will be pushing to establish himself in the first team next season.

Current first choice goalkeeper Daniel Bentley looks destined to depart this summer meaning Brown is likely to bring in another goalkeeper to fight with Smith for the number one spot.

Brown hopes the keepers will be coached by Harrison, who also assists former Southend United manager Steve Tilson at C&K Basildon Ladies.

But it is understood other clubs are also keen on appointing Harrison.
