SOUTHEND United defender Adam Barrett believes England can finally end 50 years of hurt at this summer’s European Championships.

Not since Alf Ramsey’s side won the World Cup back in 1966 have the national team been able to get their hands on a major trophy.

But Barrett believes that could be about to change and he is backing Roy Hodgson’s side to succeed in France this summer.

“I always go with my heart but I really do think England have a chance this time,” said the popular centre-back.

“We’ve got some really exciting players in the squad and it’s been fantastic what’s happened with Leicester and Tottenham this season too.

“There are young and hungry players coming through who are now in the squad.

“We’ve got Harry Kane, Eric Dyer, Dele Alli, Danny Rose and Jamie Vardy, so we’ve certainly got a chance in my opinion.

“My heart may rule my head but I’m actually looking forward to it all this time.

“We have a fresh look and I’m sure we can do well.”

England kick off their campaign against Russia in Marseille on Saturday before also facing Wales and Slovakia in the group stages.

However Barrett, who often attends international fixtures at Wembley, will not be in France for the Championships and will instead be watching from home.

“I would love to go over but I’m very busy back here at the moment so it’s not really possible unfortunately,” said Barrett.

“I’m not sure my wife would have been too pleased if I went on the back of a long season which involved plenty of travelling.

“But I’ll be watching it from home and will be cheering England on as passionately as ever.

“It’s going to be a really exciting tournament, especially with so many of the home nations involved and it’s one I’m really looking forward to.”

>Barrett was speaking at Essex Print and Publications on London Road, Leigh who have now teamed up with his Players Football Academy.
