FORMER Southend United centre-back Luke Prosser has joined the Shrimpers’ local rivals Colchester on a free transfer.

Prosser – who ended last season on loan at Northampton Town – made 164 appearances during a six year stint with the Shrimpers.

But the 28-year-old is now pleased to be teaming up with the U’s.

“I’m over the moon to have joined Colchester and I’m raring to go now,” said Prosser who was released by Southend at the end of last season.

“Colchester are a massive club and the facilities they have here are fantastic.

“They’re better than most clubs have in League One if not the Championship and I’m looking forward to coming in every day to use them."

“I certainly don’t see Colchester as a League Two club and I want to help the club get back up in to League One.”

Prosser had ended his last two seasons with promotion from League Two.

The defender was on the bench for Blues' successful play-off final with Wycombe before he ended last season with Northampton Town who won the League Two title.

And he is now seeking more of the same with Colchester who were relegated from League One last season.

"Not many players have won back to back promotions so if I can help the lads in any way with my experience then great and hopefully it can help us get over the line," said Prosser.

"Southend have quite a few ex Colchester players who I spoke to before joining and they all said really good things about the club.

"I'm happy it's all been sorted out now and I'm looking forward to meeting the lads."
