JASON Demetriou plumped for a move to Southend United to make himself feel happy.

The highly rated right-back turned down a new deal at Walsall as well as a move to Portsmouth to team up with Phil Brown’s side.

But it was talking to his family which persuaded Demetriou to opt for the Shrimpers.

“I had a few options which I spoke to my family about and they just told me to pick whatever made me happiest and that was Southend,” said the 28-year-old.

“Location wise it’s ideal because I’m from Brentwood and my family said wherever I was happiest would be where I played best and I agreed with them.

“That’s why I’ve chosen Southend and I’m buzzing to get started now.

“I can’t wait for the start of pre-season training.”

Demetriou made 57 appearances for the Saddlers last season as they finished third in the League One standings, missing out on automatic promotion on the final day of the season before also being beaten in the play-offs.

But despite their high finish, the Cypriot international insisted a switch to Southend was too good to turn down.

“Walsall is a really good club with a lot of really good people but when something is sold to you like Southend was to me it’s really hard to turn round and say no,” said Demetriou.

“The location obviously helped as well and I obviously know all about Southend from having played against them twice last season.

“They have quality players and the manager has said he will bring in a few more, so I’m looking forward to being a part of it all.

“Southend were right up there pushing for the play-offs for most of last season and hopefully we can get in them at the very least this year now.

“We’ll need to stick together but I’m pleased everything has been sorted out so early on and that I can enjoy a full pre-season with Southend now.”
