SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown has opened talks with another goalkeeper.

Blues missed out on signing Stuart Nelson after the experienced shot-stopper opted to stay with Gillingham.

But Brown has now stepped up his pursuit of a different goalkeeper as he looks to replace the departing Daniel Bentley between the sticks.

“We’re in talks with a goalkeeper I know very well, having worked with him towards the start of his career,” said Brown.

“He’s had a few ups and down since then but he was very highly rated back then and would certainly be a good signing for us.

“We’re working hard on getting the deal done with the club he’s at right now but other teams could well become interested if they are alerted to his availability, so I’m not going to be giving too much away.”

The goalkeeper in question did not play for an English club last season but is now Brown’s number one target to replace Bentley, who is wanted by Championship club Brentford.

Any incoming shot-stopper will battle with England under-20 international Ted Smith for a starting slot next season and is also likely to be guided by a new goalkeeping coach at Roots Hall.

Brown is keen for a full-time member of staff to work with the club’s keepers next season.

And he has held talks with possible targets, including former Barnet goalkeeper Lee Harrison.

“I’ve spoken with one or two people about the job and I’ve also spoken to Paul Smith now too,” said Brown.

“He’s going to apply for the job but I think it might be time for a fresh voice around the place.”
