SOUTHEND United will host local rivals Colchester in a pre-season friendly at Roots Hall later this month.
The U’s - who were relegated from League One last season - will visit the Shrimpers on Saturday July 30.
And Blues boss Phil Brown is pleased to have secured what he believes will be a competitive clash.
“I think the fact it’s a local derby will give the game a little bit more than a normal friendly which I think is good the week before the season starts,” said Brown.
“It will be a competitive game and hopefully we’ll have a decent crowd in attendance too.”
Blues triumphed in both matches against Colchester last season but their 3-0 win at Roots Hall in early February was marred by crowd trouble.
