RYAN Leonard bagged a brace in Southend United’s 7-0 win at Great Wakering Rovers on Saturday and is keen to become more of an attacking threat for the Shrimpers this season.

The midfielder scored three goals for Blues last term.

But he now has his sights set on becoming more a threat in the final third.

“It was nice to start off the friendlies and I enjoyed trying to play a bit higher up the pitch as well,” said Leonard, 24.

“I hope to be able to do that a bit more this year but as long as I’m playing I don’t really mind what role I’m given.

“My fitness levels are probably good enough to do either but I want to start chipping in with a few more goals.

“This was certainly a good way to start but pre-season is about fitness work so you can’t really read too much into it.”
