WILL Atkinson is backing Mark Oxley to shine between the sticks for Southend United this season.

Atkinson was with Oxley at Hull City at the start of their careers.

And he believes the goalkeeper will be a big hit at Roots Hall.

“The manager spoke to me about the possibility of signing Mark and I told him he should definitely get him in if he could,” said Atkinson.

“Losing Dan Bentley was a big blow for all of us because he’s such a good goalkeeper but I know Mark well from our time at Hull City together and we’ve definitely got a really good replacement there.”

Oxley had been due to line up for the Shrimpers at Braintree Town tomorrow before the clash was called off.

However, Blues - who are still looking for opponents to take on tomorrow - have beaten Great Wakering Rovers and Canvey Island in their first two warm-up games.

And Atkinson is pleased to be back in action.

“It’s good to be back in and to see the lads again,” said the midfielder.

“We’ve had two 45 minutes each at the moment and it’s just about getting a feel for it again and working on your fitness too.

“We’re training at the same time so it’s been hard, especially as we’ve been doing double sessions pretty much every day but that’s what pre-season is all about and it stands you in good stead for later on in the year.

“Quite a lot of the work has been done with a football, which is good “It makes it more enjoyable for us and things are coming along nicely at the moment.”

Blues will continue their pre-season preparations by heading out to Spain on Sunday for six days of warm-weather training.

And Atkinson believes the trip will also be of huge benefit.

“Those of us who have been here a while know what to expect in Spain and it’s always really good for us all,” said Atkinson.

“It’s good for training and our fitness at this time of year.

“It’s always excellent for team-bonding as well because we’re together pretty much all day.

“It’s always a good way of getting to know the new signings better as well.

“And best of all, we make them all sing so we have our entertainment sorted out for the evening as well.”
