SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown will be paying close attention to both sets of teams when the Shrimpers do battle with a young West Ham United side tomorrow.

The Blues boss will be running the rule over a trio of his own trialists during the clash at Great Wakering Rovers’ Burroughs Park base.

But he will also be keeping a keen eye on the West Ham line-up with a view to possible loan signings.

“West Ham’s under-21s are very strong so I will be paying close attention to both teams tomorrow as you never know what can happen,” said Brown.

“We’re getting nearer the business time of pre-season now, so more of our players will be playing for longer as we also look to finalise our starting line-up for the Gillingham game.

“We need to have another look at Jakub Sokolik, William Edjenguélé and Ronan Murray, who we have on trial, but it will be good to see the West Ham youngsters up close too.

“In last year’s game we were impressed by Stephen Hendrie, who we ended up getting in on loan ,while a couple of other West Ham youngsters went to Bradford and did well there.

“The loan system is slightly different this year, so we will have to bring in anyone we want by the end of August.

“But this is certainly a good opportunity to have a look at one or two things and it’s going to be another good work out for everyone too.”

Brown is expected to decide whether or not to hand Sokolik, Edjenguélé and Murray permanent contracts after tomorrow’s game.

But trialist striker Nile Ranger – who is with the Shrimpers until the end of the month – is not expected to line up against West Ham.

“Nile has a tight groin, so he didn’t play in the game we had in Spain and he’s doubtful for the game on Saturday too,” said Brown.

“He’s been doing a lot of fitness work after not having worked at that level of intensity for a little while, so we’re being careful with him at the moment.”

Prices for tomorrow’s game have been set at £12 for adults and £6 concessions.

Season cards holders can buy tickets for £10 up until 12 noon today, while season card holders who are concessions will receive a £1 discount if they also buy their tickets before midday.

Those aged 16 and under can watch the game, which kicks off at 3pm, for just £1 There is also a £1 charge per car to use the car park.
