SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown felt his side enjoyed a good night’s work against Newcastle United this evening.

The Shrimpers were beaten 2-0 by Rafa Benitez’s team at Roots Hall.

But Brown was happy with how Blues stood up to their Championship opponents.

“There were a lot of good things happening for us out there,” said the Southend boss.

“You never want to lose but the two goalscorers cost them a fortune and there was a lot of talent on that pitch.

“We had a game plan to frustrate them and we more than matched them at times.

“It was a good work out tactically and physically for us.

“Jason Williams and Ronan Murray made it frustrating for them in the first half and it was a good night’s work.”

Trialist striker Murray started the game along with centre-back Jakub Sokolik while William Edjenguélé played the second half.

The trio all held talks with Brown at the end of the game and the Shrimpers boss is expected to announce tomorrow whether or not the trio will be offered contracts.
