NEWCASTLE United manager Rafa Benitez is backing Southend United to enjoy a successful season in League One.
Benitez’s Magpies side triumphed 2-0 at Roots Hall last night.
But the former Liverpool boss was impressed by what he saw from the Shrimpers.
“I thought Southend played well and from what I saw here I think they can have a good season,” said Benitez.
“They worked hard and made it difficult for us by playing on the counter attack.
“They had to come at us a bit more after we got the first goal but I enjoyed coming here and what pleased me the most was the pitch which was excellent.”
Vernon Anita and Yoan Gouffran both netted for Newcastle in the second half.
