SOUTHEND United’s under 21 coach Kevin Maher was a frustrated figure after his side conceded a last gasp equaliser against Stevenage this afternoon.

Goals from Dan Matsuzaka and Dan Walker seemed to have given the Shrimpers a 2-1 win against a strong Stevenage line-up.

But Blues were unable to see out the closing stages to leave Maher disappointed at the final whistle.

“It was a good game against a strong Stevenage side but naturally we’re disappointed to have conceded in the last minute,” said Maher.

“We didn’t play as well as we can but we probably still did enough to win the game which is an encouraging side.

“This is a very talented group but they still have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to seeing out matches.

“They have to learn where and when to play but that will come.”

Blues’ youngsters start their competitive season in the Premier League Cup at Portsmouth on Monday.
