SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown felt the Shrimpers' under 21 team looked naive in their 4-0 defeat at Peterborough United this afternoon.

Blues included Luke O'Neill, Stephen McLaughlin and Jermaine McGlashan in their starting line-up, along with trialist striker Marc-Antoine Fortune.

However Blues selected a young back four who found it tough going against a strong Posh side.

"If I'm honest I thought we looked a bit naive out there against what was quite a strong Peterborough side," said Brown.

"I think seven or eight of their starting line-up had played first team football including Jerome Binnom-Williams and Shaq Coulthirst who we know well and they made it hard going for us.

"We were able to create a few chances but we didn't take any of them.

"Peterborough took the chances they got and was the main difference between the teams.

"But I'm sure the young players we had out there would have learnt a lot from the game."

On-loan Tottenham Hotspur youngster Nathan Oduwa bagged a brace for Peterborough before a trialist the Posh did not want to name made it 3-0 with a neat finish.

Late on, Peterborough completed the scoring with former Blues loanee Coulthirst firing home from the penalty spot after he was brought down in the box.

The Shrimpers also introduced trialist striker Josh Parker into the game at half-time as he replaced Jack Bridge.

But the former Red Star Belgrade man could not help Southend get back into the game.

Blues: Bexon, Bwomono, Coutts, Matsuzaka, Clifford, Bedford, Bridge (Parker), O'Neill, McLaughlin, Antoine-Fortune, McGlashan (Walker)
