BLUES boss Phil Brown believes Brighton & Hove Albion chief Chris Hughton should be in the running to be the next England manager.

Hughton’s Seagulls side are currently fourth in the Championship.

And Brown feels the former Norwich City and Newcastle United manager should now be in the thoughts of the Football Association as they look to replace Sam Allardyce.

“Chris Hughton comes to mind for me because of the great job he’s been doing in the English game,” said Brown.

“He’s a tactician and a technician and he’s been at some big clubs both as a player and as a manager.

“He knows how to deal with the stature of the players but there are a lot of good managers out there.

“Sean Dyche is another one but whoever gets the job has to be squeaky clean and if there are any skeletons in your closest then don’t apply.”

Gareth Southgate is currently in charge of England on an interim basis.

And Brown would hate to see a foreign manager taking over.

“If Gareth does well in the games he has then I’m sure he will get the job full-time but if he doesn’t then it should be another Englishman,” said Brown.

“I’m against a foreign manager being in charge of England.

“But I do understand the argument of it being a foreign manager who understands our style like Arsene Wenger who is now seen as a French Englishman.”
