JASON Demetriou is seeking another successful afternoon at Walsall this weekend - only this time as an opposition player.

The Southend United right-back suffered just five league home defeats while with the Saddlers last season, winning 11 of his 21 appearances at the Bescot Stadium.

And, having opted to join Blues in the summer, the 29-year-old is now keen to maintain his good record by helping Phil Brown’s side to record another victory on the road.

“I left Walsall with a lot of good memories and hopefully I can have another one there on Saturday with Southend,” said Demetriou.

“I’m looking forward to going back but obviously I’m with Southend now and we’re going there with a job to do.

“Walsall was my first season back in English football for quite some time and we had a really good year, just missing out on position.

“But obviously I want the three points with Southend so we can continue our climb up the table.”

The Shrimpers make the trip to Walsall sitting ninth in the standings having not lost in their last seven league games.

However, the Saddlers have struggled for consistency this season.

Jon Whitney’s side are currently 17th in the table and Demetriou still believes he made the right decision in coming to Roots Hall.

“I had the opportunity to go to Southend which is on my doorstep and it was my personal choice to come here,” explained the Cypriot international.

“I’m at home with my family and it’s perfect really.

“I’m very happy at Southend and I’m glad I came here.

“The team is a lot more confident now and we’re being far more consistent which is something we want to continue at Walsall.”

However, the defender believes the Saddlers will still provide a stern test for the Shrimpers.

“Walsall have changed their team a fair bit since I was there and they have a lot of young boys now which can often lead to inconsistency,” said Demetriou.

“But on a good day they are a very good team and I’m sure this is going to be another very difficult game. They will definitely look to play football the right way but we’ve got our plan and we need to use it if we’re going to get the win.”

An away win would also frustrate Walsall’s supporters and Demetriou is unsure what kind of reception he will receive.

“I’m hoping for a good reaction but you never know because football can be a fickle sport at times,” he added.
