GOALS from Harry Phillips and Norman Wabo saw Southend United’s under 21 team win 2-1 at AFC Wimbledon this afternoon.

Phillips put the Shrimpers in front with a fantastic free-kick before Toyosi Olusanya brought the Dons back level.

But Wabo fired home to continue his fine goalscoring run and secure Blues a hard fought victory which pleased coach Kevin Maher.

“It was a very good result because Wimbledon are a good team and are always tough to come and play against,” said Maher.

“We dug in when needed and the defending was much better than against Colchester last week which was pleasing to see.

“We looked far more solid as a unit and everyone put a real shift in to help us get the victory.”

And Maher was also delighted by how the Shrimpers performed at the other end of the pitch.

“We had a threat going forward and it won us the game,” said the former Blues midfielder.

“Harry scored a very good free-kick and then Norman popped up with another goal.

“Dan Walker did well to create it for him.

“But Norman gets in great positions and was able to score again to get us the win.”
