ADAM Thompson was encouraged by Southend United’s fighting spirit in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Millwall.

The Shrimpers played close to an hour with 10 men at the New Den after midfielder Will Atkinson was sent off.

And, despite being hurt by the final score-line, Thompson was proud of Blues’ battling capabilities.

“It’s always tough with 10 men but we didn’t roll over and die,” said Thompson.

“We seemed to play better with 10 men if anything and showed how strong the mentality of our side is.

“We didn’t start the game too well but we probably deserved a point for the determination we showed and if one or two decisions had gone differently we might have got one.

“But there’s plenty to be encouraged by.

“It’s two defeats in 18 games and although we’re all very disappointed in the way we lost the game I think we have to try and stay positive.”

The defeat - which was Blues’ first away from home in the league since October - saw Phil Brown’s side slip out of the play-off positions and down to eighth in the League One table.

But Thompson is now demanding a strong response when the play-off chasing Shrimpers travel to in-form Oxford United tomorrow night for another important encounter.

“It’s all about how we react now and it’s another big game on Tuesday against Oxford,” said the 24-year-old.

“Oxford are in and around us in the table after a good run of results and these are the games you want to be getting three points.

“I think it’s good we’re playing again so soon and we will be fired up to get back to winning ways.

“Everyone is going to be really fired up for another game with a good team.

“But we need to make sure we roll our sleeves up and get back on it.”
