SOUTHEND United striker David Mooney will continue his comeback from an ankle injury by lining up for the Shrimpers’ under 21 team against Bristol Rovers this afternoon.
Mooney played more than an hour in an in-house friendly at Roots Hall last week.
But Blues boss Phil Brown expects Mooney, who has been out injured since October, to step things up against the Pirates.
“David Mooney should play a full game,” said Brown.
“Fingers crossed he will come through unscathed and be somewhere near being able to push for a place in the first team.
“He played 75 minutes last week and will now look to build on that against Bristol Rovers.”
Young centre-back Dan Matsuzaka is likely to play the first half before joining up with the first team squad for tonight’s trip to Peterborough United.
But winger Stephen McLaughlin, who injured his ankle against Charlton Athletic at the end of December, is not yet ready to be involved.
“It’s a game too soon for Stephen,” said Brown.
“He’ll be closer for next week but he’s making good progress and I think we might be able to pencil him in for the Port Vale game which will be good news.
“Macca’s return will put pressure on the players and also me with regards to what system we will play.
“But it will be great to have him back.”
