SOUTHEND United centre-back Anton Ferdinand could make an unexpected return to the starting line-up at Gillingham tomorrow.

The 32-year-old had been expected to be out of action for at least a fortnight with the calf problem he picked up during the 2-2 draw with Northampton Town last weekend.

But Blues boss Phil Brown revealed the defender could now be in line to start at the Priestfield Stadium.

“It was a grade two tear for Anton which normally means you’re looking at two weeks and beyond but he knows his body better than any scan or radiologist,” said Brown.

“All you can do is go on the quality of the information he’s giving me and I’m very confident he will be able to play.

“But I’ll be making sure he trains rigorously enough so we don’t end up making a team selection which is going to disappoint somebody.”

Ferdinand, who has captained Blues for much of the season, was replaced by Ryan Inniss for Tuesday night’s 4-1 win at Peterborough United.

The on loan Crystal Palace defender produced a solid display alongside Adam Thompson.

However, he still looks set to lose his place in the side if the experienced Ferdinand can prove his return to full fitness.

“Anton has played a big part in 20 of the last 22 games and Ryan Inniss has played a big part in one of them,” explained Brown.

“A fully fit Anton Ferdinand would be in the team and Ryan Inniss knows that.

“But I have to make sure it’s not a half fit Anton before I pick the team.

“That’s where his experience will play a part because he understands the situation we’re in ahead of what is going to be another important and difficult game.”

Blues head into the clash looking for a third away win in succession.

And Brown is certain Ferdinand will be sensible in whether or not to declare himself available for the game.

“Anton knows my position probably more than any player in the changing room and he will definitely do what’s right,” said the Shrimpers chief.

“If you look at his character he’s someone who will definitely stay in the game once he decides to stop playing.

“I think he will go into coaching and management so he will know this is a big, big decision.

“He certainly won’t take any risks and I know he will do what is best for the team but we will see how he goes in training and then decide from there.”
