SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is confident his promotion pushing squad will avoid a repeat of last season.

The Shrimpers were well placed just outside the play-off places after 33 games last time around only to win just two of their final 13 outings.

But Brown does not expect the same to happen his term.

“We’re a better team than last season and we have a much better squad too,” said Brown.

“I think this is the best squad I’ve had since being here and the treatment room is emptying now as well.

“We have plenty of options available all over the pitch and everyone is under pressure to perform.

“Zavon Hines had one poor substitute appearance at Fleetwood and has been sitting in the stands for the last four or five games.

“That’s a marker to everyone and he’s someone who has played in the Premier League.

“Everyone has to perform to stay in the team but we’re really not looking any further ahead than tomorrow’s game with Gillingham.”

Blues will again be without goalkeeper Mark Oxley at the Priestfield Stadium.

And the shot-stopper could now miss the remainder of the season with his elbow injury.

“Mark has had a setback,” said Brown. “The wound is still open and it’s knocked him back a couple of weeks. It’s looking like he won’t play again this season but I would never categorically say that.”
