ANTHONY Wordsworth has triggered a clause in his contract to stay at Southend United for a further season.

The goal-getting midfielder - who is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem - now has a deal at Roots Hall until the end of the next season.

And Blues boss Phil Brown is delighted to be keeping hold of Wordsworth.

“Woody has scored 12 goals this season and it’s good news he’s triggered the extension in his contract as far as I’m concerned,” said Brown.

“He’s been a key player for us and it’s just a shame he’s picked up this injury.”

Wordsworth missed Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Shrewsbury Town with a hamstring problem.

And the midfielder - who also missed the start of the season with a hamstring injury - may have to undergo surgery to bounce back from the latest setback.

“Woody is going to see a specialist tomorrow and we’re going to know more then,” said Brown.

“We’re waiting to find out if he’s going to need an operation and unfortunately we’ve had to rule him out for the season.”

Wordsworth has 12 goals in 36 starts this season.
