SOUTHEND United have activated a year-long clause in Ryan Leonard’s contract and are also in talks about a new three year deal.

The influential 24-year-old has enjoyed another fine season with the Shrimpers.

And Blues boss Phil Brown is keen to keep Leonard at the club.

“We’ve activated the clause in Lenny’s contract but I’m also in talks with his agent about a three year deal,” said Brown.

“Lenny won the Shrimpers Trust player of the year award and I’m sure he will be towards the top of all the polls that are done at this time because he’s been fantastic.

“He covers all areas of the pitch, he’s quick, he has a long throw and is way above six foot so he has good ability in the air.

“He’s close to being the perfect footballer.”
