ECHOSPORT talks to Bury fan Mat Anderson ahead of Sunday’s game at Roots Hall.

What have you made of Bury’s season so far?

“It’s been a long horrible disaster unfolding right in front of our eyes.

“We started really well but the problems in defence were there all along and thank the lord for those points now!

“But once we started conceding goals and losing that was it. “Nobody had any sort of plan to stop it. Eventually we went to five at the back and apart from one or two games since then we’ve plugged it up a lot.”

Bury are 19th, just two points above the relegation zone. Why do you feel this season hasn’t gone too well?

“The defence has been a problem all season.

“Our attack has scored more goals than our last promotion season.

“But it’s been the same in past seasons, under Dave Flitcroft, because when we’ve gone a losing run we couldn’t stop it.

“I think we ended up having 11 defeats in a row and 18 without a win. There were times in that run where I asked myself if I was ever going to see us win again!”

What Bury players will Blues need to keep an eye on this weekend?

“James Vaughan will win the player of the season award with around 90 per cent of the votes.

“Twenty-four goals in a struggling side is an incredible effort.

“He had real big boots to fill in Leon Clarke but has done it with ease.

“Gregg Leigh at left back was really finding it difficult in a struggling side but since the switch to five at the back he has been a bundle of energy at wing back.

“He’s the type that will run all day and his switch of pace is becoming a really good weapon.

“Joe Murphy in goal has at last given us a really good goalkeeper too.

“It’s been a revolving door system over the last few seasons but since he came in and subsequently signed a deal for next year we look a lot steadier at the back.”

What’s the team news ahead of the game?

“It would be a massive surprise if it’s not five at back which will be Murphy in goal and Taylor Moore, Gregg Leigh, Anthony Kay, Leon Barnett and Cameron Burgess in defence.

"Up front will be James Vaughan and more than likely Tom Pope.

“In midfield, I’m sorry your guess is as good as mine!”
