SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is keen on bringing Michael Kightly back to the club.

The 31-year-old former Chalvedon School pupil is available on a free transfer after being released by Premier League side Burnley.

But Brown knows he will face stiff competition to secure the winger’s signature.

“Michael Kightly has the quality and experience I would like to bring to the club but I would imagine he would have a lot of clubs after him from a higher level,” said Brown.

“He may be too expensive for us in terms of wages but he’s certainly someone I’m interested in.”

The Basildon born Kightly started his career with the Shrimpers and made 19 appearances before being released in 2005.
