SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was unhappy with the Shrimpers’ display at Braintree Town on Saturday despite the 2-1 victory.
Goals from Simon Cox and Marc-Antoine Fortune saw Blues come out on top at Cressing Road.
But Brown - whose side had Michael Timlin sent off for violent conduct midway through the second half - was disappointed by the display.
“I thought it was poor,” said Brown.
“I expect the players to improve in their mentality, movement, fitness and performance but that will happen because we’re only two weeks into pre-season at the moment.
“We won the game but there’s a lot of work to be done in many areas and we know that.”
