SOUTHEND United’s under-21 team begin a busy period of pre-season friendlies when they head to Thurrock tonight.
Kevin Maher’s side will take on the Isthmian Premier League team this evening before also facing Maidstone United and Colchester United in the next few days.
“We’re playing three games in the space of six days so it’s busy and important for us,” said Maher.
“We have people who need minutes and they are going to be getting them in these matches to make sure they get in the best shape possible.
“Thurrock will be a good game and a good test against a men’s team which is ultimately what the boys want to be doing so it will be good for them.
“We’ve tried to vary things up in pre-season with the matches we’ve got and I think that’s the best way to prepare the players.”
Blues travel to Maidstone this weekend before making the short trip to Colchester United on Monday.
Centre-back Joe Mackenzie is expected to miss out with a knee problem while midfielder Lewis Gard is doubtful with concussion.
