SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown will be bidding to secure the club’s first League Cup victory in seven years tonight.
The Shrimpers host League Two side Newport County and Brown is keen to claim his first triumph in the competition since becoming Blues boss in March 2013.
“We’ve been setting records and bucking trends since I’ve been at the club so it would be nice to end our bad record in this competition now too,” said Brown, who has suffered first round exits in the past four seasons.
“A cup run is important for us and our season but Newport will provide us with a different type of challenge this evening.”
Blues have not won in the League Cup since beating Bristol City 3-2 after extra time in August 2010.
