JASON Demetriou insists he is happy to line up on the left hand side in a bid to get Southend United’s season back on track.

The Cyprus international - who normally plays at right-back - has featured on the opposite side of the Shrimpers defence in his last two outings.

And the 29-year-old would be willing to continue in his new role.

“It was strange at first when I was at left-back but when I first started at Leyton Orient I was actually a left winger for three or four years so I have played on that side before,” said Demetriou.

“My left foot isn’t that good but I can use it if I need to and I feel fine playing there.

“It took a while to get used to the angles but in the end I was OK with it and it wasn’t too bad at all.”

Demetriou produced a steady display on the left hand side against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night but was unable to prevent the Shrimpers suffering a 1-0 defeat.

But the defender is keen to stay positive despite Blues’ winless run of eight matches.

“We were very disappointed after Tuesday but the good thing is the atmosphere is still positive,” said Demetriou.

“Anton (Ferdinand) said after the game to stay positive and we can’t afford to be thinking negatively.

“Shrewsbury are top of the league but we deserved something from the game and we were so close to getting it too.

“The small things are going against us, we had two good shouts for a penalty not given but it just wasn’t our night.”

Demetriou’s night was made extra frustrating after he was singled out for abuse from the Shrewsbury supporters.

And the defender revealed the taunts came after he clashed with a ball-boy.

“The ball-boy was taunting us with the ball and pretended to give it back,” explained Demetriou.

“I reacted a little bit badly but I did apologise at the end. In the heat of the moment you’re just trying to get the ball back and he’s hiding it but I did ask politely for him to give it back.”

The defeat saw the Shrimpers slip down to 19th in the League One standings.

And Demetriou is desperate to bounce back against Northampton Town this weekend.

“Hopefully we can turn things around on Saturday,” said Demetriou.

“One good win can change everything.”
