SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown was disappointed with his side’s 2-2 draw with Northampton Town – despite the Shrimpers having come back from 2-0 down to get it.

Second half goals from Jason Demetriou and Anthony Wordsworth saw Southend pick up a point at Roots Hall.

But Brown was frustrated not to take all three.

“I should be crying because I’m bemoaning the fact we’ve thrown two points away and we can’t keep doing it,” said Blues.

“Coming from 2-0 down it sounds like a good point but it’s two more dropped for me.

“It’s the fourth time we’ve had a draw from a game we should have won and it can’t continue otherwise people will lose their jobs, positions and shirts.

“It’s as simple as that.”

Saturday’s draw saw the Shrimpers’ winless streak extended to nine games.

And Brown felt Blues’ fragile defending played a part in them picking up just a point against the Cobblers.

“We’re a tad fragile when we concede a goal at the moment.

“We don’t go under but we take our foot off the gas.

“We thought (Northampton assistant) Dean Austin was going to be a key factor in the game because he’s been at Southend, he’s been on the training ground and he’s watched my work.

“We thought that might play a part and I think it did for the first goal.

“It got them an advantage they then extended and if I was a fan I would have been have been half tempted to go at half-time after witnessing a lacklustre affair.”

However, the Shrimpers were able to fight back after the break and Brown was full of praise for the second half performance.

“The second half was the kind of performance I’m after,” said Brown.

“It was full of drive and determination and it was basically one way traffic.

“I was probably the only man in the stadium not to make changes at half-time but I gave them the chance to put them right and we got a couple of goals.”

The equalising effort came from the fit-again Wordsworth who was making his first appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in April.

And Brown was thrilled to see the midfielder back in action.

“His hour on the pitch was full of the old Anthony Wordsworth,” said Brown.

“It was full of quality and he was making us play.

“If he could have stayed on for 90 minutes I think we would’ve won but it’s great to have him back.

“We originally had him down to play just the first half but he lasted an hour and he’s come through it which is obviously a huge positive for us to take from the game.”
