JASON Demetriou is backing Southend United to build on their draw with Northampton Town.

The Shrimpers fought back from 2-0 down to claim a share of the spoils against the Cobblers on Saturday.

And the right-back, who bagged Blues’ first goal, is confident Phil Brown’s side will soon get back to winning ways.

“It was positive the way we came back to get a point and we should probably have got all three in the end so we just need to carry that on and build on the point,”said Demetriou.

“We felt hard done by going 2-0 down because there wasn’t really much in the game, but we stayed positive and the manager told us we would be able to steam-roll them if we got going.

“We got a couple of goals and I don’t think there’s much wrong in the team right now.

“We just need a couple of things to click into place and I can sense it’s starting to happen.

“The manager has told us we’ve had more shots than any other team in the league and once they start flying in the results will improve, hopefully starting with Saturday.”

Blues - who have not won in nine games - make the long trip to Fleetwood Town this weekend.

But Demetriou is convinced the Shrimpers have what it takes to triumph.

“We drew there last season but we know what to expect from them,” said the full-back.

“They are a good side but we want to go there and do what we did in the second half on Saturday.

“We also have Anthony Wordsworth back in the team after his injury and that’s great news too.”

Wordsworth bagged the Shrimpers’ second goal at the weekend after Demetriou had got Brown’s charges back in the game with a deflected effort at the start of the second half at Roots Hall.

But Demetriou - who was voted man of the match in an Echosport online poll - insisted the goal was definitely his, especially after Simon Cox claimed what the Cyprus international thought was his goal in the 3-3 draw at Gillingham last month.

“It was definitely my goal on Saturday and Simon Cox won’t be claiming it,” laughed Demetriou.

“As soon as I hit it I thought it had a real chance of going in and I was buzzing to see it hit the back of the net.

“There was no time to celebrate as we wanted to get the second goal, but it was good to score especially as it helped us get something from the game.”
