JOSH Wright is keen to fire Southend United up the League One standings with a win against Bury tomorrow - but he will not be studying the table if he does.

The Shrimpers head into the game at Roots Hall occupying 15th position.

But Wright insists he will be taking very little notice of league placings until at least Christmas time.

“It’s important we win tomorrow to get back to winning ways and stay as close as we can to the play-offs, but it’s still too early to be looking at the table in my opinion,” said Wright.

“I know we’re five points behind the top six at the moment but I don’t really tend to pay much attention to the table until at least Christmas time.

“It’s still very, very early in the season so I don’t think you can really read too much into who is where at the moment.

“But we’re just focusing on the next game and for us that’s making sure we beat Bury.”

Wright is certainly no stranger to seeing off the Shakers either, having won all four of his previous encounters against the Gigg Lane side.

The 27-year-old did the double over Bury with Gillingham last season.

And he now wants more of the same for the Shrimpers.

“I was thinking earlier when driving home how I must have a good record against Bury and obviously I want that to continue,” said the midfielder.

“Whether or not previous results play much of a part I’m not really sure but, on this occasion, I hope it does because we want and need to get back to winning ways.”

Wright - who joined the Shrimpers following his release from the Gills in August - started off with three straight wins for Phil Brown’s side but has now gone three matches without a victory.

However, the midfielder remains confident Blues will be able to mount a challenge for a top six finish.

“You have ups and downs in football and I’ve had them already in my short time at Southend but I still think we have a great chance of doing something this season,” said Wright.

“We played some great stuff against Peterborough at times and with the players we have along with our manager I really do think we can get into the top six, especially when you consider those who we still have to come back.”

One of those - Michael Kightly - will return to action this weekend and Wright cannot wait to link up with the winger.

“Kights is someone I have known for a while and he’s a quality player,” said Wright.

“It’s great to have him back.”
