GOALSCORING hero Jason Demetriou was happy to be back to his best in Southend United’s 1-0 win at Peterborough United.

The Shrimpers right-back fired home the only goal of the game from the penalty spot on Saturday.

And Demetriou was thrilled to play a prominent part in the hard fought victory having previously been below par in Chris Powell’s first game in charge against Scunthorpe United.

“Last Saturday wasn’t my best game and I did speak to the manager to tell him I didn’t normally play like that,” said Demetriou, who has now scored six goals this season. “I thought I did a bit better and I’m glad about that.”

“The manager has been good to us, especially myself.

“He gives you that confidence that he believes in you and this was one of the best victories we’ve had this season. It might not have been a great game for the neutral but we stuck together and this is a great three points.”

The victory - which saw the Shrimpers move up to 15th in the League One standings - came courtesy of Demetriou’s early penalty as he scored from the spot for the third time in succession.

And the right-back was pleased to maintain his 100 per cent success rate from the spot.

“You have to try and zone out a bit when taking a penalty,” explained Demetriou.

“It’s mind games with the keeper where you’re going to go and luckily they’re going in at the moment. We could maybe have scored a second goal after that to make it a bit easier for ourselves but it was a good team performance and we’re going in the right direction.”

And Demetriou believes the togetherness of the team has been the reason for the back to back wins.

“We were underachieving for whatever reason but the spirit is there now and we’re all in it for each other.

“Everyone could see how much it meant to us at the end but we are a good team. We were in a bit of trouble but we’ve had a couple of wins and now we want to build on them.

“There’s no better feeling than going back in the dressing room after getting the three points so we want to keep on experiencing it.”

Blues initially celebrated their win at the weekend with a post-match huddle and Demetriou also felt that showed the spirit in the side.

“You could see we were absolutely buzzing to get the three points and all came together,” said the defender.

“It’s a good sign and we’re building towards where we want to go to.”
