SOUTHEND United winger Michael Kightly will have a scan on his injured hamstring today.

Kightly was taken off at half-time against Bury on Tuesday night.

But Blues boss Chris Powell has yet to discover how long the 32-year-old will be out for.

“Michael Kightly will have a scan on Friday and we will know more after that,” said Powell.

“He will miss the game this weekend and that’s a real shame because he’s been very good.

“He has done all I’ve asked of him and more. He’s scored a couple of goals and has good qualities from wide areas.

“I really like him and he understands what I want because he’s played at a higher level.

“He’s played at Burnley and their style is something we’ve been mirroring as such, albeit at a lower level.

“We want the players to be diligent in and out of possession and have that work rate and intensity.

“But Michael’s injury creates a chance for someone else although we might have to re-jig things.”

Jermaine McGlashan, who replaced Kightly at Bury, is among those pushing for a place in the starting line-up this weekend.

However, Josh Wright - who has been out of action since December with a hamstring injury - could also be back in contention along with the on loan Sam Mantom, who has yet to feature since joining from Scunthorpe United on transfer deadline day.

“Josh and Sam are training with the group,” said Powell.

“Josh has played a few games this season but Sam hasn’t so we’ll have a look at them and see what we decide.”

Blues striker Simon Cox, who missed Tuesday night’s trip to Bury due to personal reasons, is back in the squad but Anthony Wordsworth is still missing with a calf problem.

And Powell will again be without centre-back Rob Kiernan (knee) and goalkeeper Ted Smith (shoulder).

“Rob Kiernan is doing some light running,” said Powell.

“He’s on the way back, but he’s going to be a while. It’s not one we are going to rush.

“Ted Smith has taken a while too, but it’s an injury you can’t rush.

“There’s no set date for him to come back.”
