BEN Coker feels Southend United are reaping the rewards of becoming closer together since the arrival of Chris Powell as manager.

The Shrimpers - who host Portsmouth at Roots Hall tomorrow - have not lost in four games since Powell replaced Phil Brown in charge.

And Coker is certain the improved results have been secured due to the improved spirit which now exists in the side.

“I think the new manager has got us all closer together,” said the left-back.

“I also think he’s clamped down on us to make sure we’re working hard and everyone can see that in the games we’ve had so far.

“I don’t think there’s ever really been any doubt about the quality we have in this squad.

“But everyone really knows their individual roles and we’re all buzzing going into the Portsmouth game even though we know they will be hard to play against and are a good side too.”

Blues have taken 10 points out of 12 with Powell in charge to move up to 14th in the League One standings.

And Coker is keen to keep the good run going against Portsmouth in a game which will be played in front of a bumper Roots Hall crowd.

“These games take care of themselves really and we can’t wait to get out there,” said Coker, who has captained the Shrimpers since Powell came to the club.

“We’ve seen that 8,000 tickets have already been sold and I’m sure their end will be packed as well, so the whole stadium is going to be full.

“When you run out and see the stadium like that it gives you a real buzz and I’m sure there’s going to be a great atmosphere.

“These are the matches you want to be involved in and we want to make sure we keep our good run going by getting another good result.”

The Shrimpers won their first three games with Powell in charge before drawing 0-0 at Bury on Tuesday night.

But Coker felt Blues could well have secured more than just a share of the spoils against the Shakers.

“We had a few chances against Bury and on another night I think a few of them would have gone in and we would have got the three points,” said Coker.

“It was a difficult game and we face another difficult one tomorrow.

“But everyone is really good and we can’t wait to get out there in front of a big crowd again on Saturday.”
