SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell is happy to be heading to Oldham Athletic with increased options in midfield this weekend.

Dru Yearwood and Michael Timlin have been in fine form in the centre of the park since Powell took charge.

But the Shrimpers boss now has Josh Wright and Sam Mantom pushing for places after both lined up for the under-23s against MK Dons on Tuesday.

“We always planned for them to be training with us, but nothing beats playing games because you can’t replicate that in training,” said Powell.

“Josh looked good and so did Sam.

“He hadn’t played since October, so it was important he pushed himself and they will both be in the squad.”

However, the duo seem unlikely to be in the starting line-up - given the form of those already in the side.

“Timlin and Dru have been excellent,” said Powell.

“We’ve asked Tims to control that area and he’s done it really well.

“I know he’s known for being very energetic, but he can do it from a solid base.

“He’s been top drawer and it’s allowed Dru to do what he does, but I know I have other options now.”

And there will soon be further strength in depth with Anthony Wordsworth closing in on a return from a calf injury.

“Wordsworth is now training with us and we’re hopeful of having a friendly game next week,” said Powell.

“If we do then he will be involved and that’s another good option for us.”
