SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell feels the Shrimpers still have plenty to play for this season - despite their mid-table position.

Blues make the long trip to Blackpool this weekend sitting 13th in the League One table with just 10 games to go.

But Powell insists the remaining matches are all incredibly important for his team.

“There’s still a lot to play for,” said Powell.

“We want to finish in the top half or top 10 because that’s still doable and there’s a outside chance of something beyond that.

“We also have to make sure we aren’t dragged into anything that’s going on below us because it’s still very tight.

“ I don’t want to be involved in any of that but I’m mindful that we don’t have enough points yet so we have to make sure that’s dealt with.”

The Shrimpers - who have drawn 0-0 in their last two games - are currently 10 points below the play-off positions and eight points above the relegation zone.

But Powell is now also starting to plan for next season.

“There’s more to play for beyond this season too,” said the 48-year-old.

“We have players out of contract and even if they’re in contract I have to look beyond that and see if they are going to be part of what I want from the team next year. It’s very important and no-one should rest.

“I won’t allow anyone to rest.

“I’m looking at each game but I’m still planning beyond because I have to. I want this club to move onto bigger and better things.”

However, Powell’s immediate aim is to end this season on a high.

“It’s important we finish with a flourish and show the fans that this season won’t peter out,” said Powell.

“That can’t because there’s too much to play for and there are many important games and issues to be dealt with.”
