ANTHONY Wordsworth is keen to keep on impressing for Southend United as he bids to win a new deal with the Shrimpers.

The 29-year-old’s current contract expires at the end of the season.

But Wordsworth wants to remain at Roots Hall.

“I would definitely like to stay at Southend and I’ll be doing all I can to play well and get more game-time,” said the midfielder.

“I was offered a contract by the previous manager but things have changed since then and I would like to be a part of it.

“I enjoyed playing for Phil Brown and I had one of my best seasons with him last year but it’s been good since the new manager came in with Kevin Keen and Damian Matthew.

“I think with a proper pre-season and a summer where the manager has brought in a few players it’s going to be really exciting. I want to be here for that so I’m glad to be fit and back in the team.”

Wordsworth - who was sidelined by a calf problem two months before returning in early March - has started the last two matches for the Shrimpers.

And he enjoyed lining up on the left hand side of the midfield against Blackpool on Saturday.

“I like being there,” said Wordsworth.

“I actually feel I had the best season of my career playing that role when Aidy Boothroyd was in charge at Colchester but I’m happy to play wherever.”

Wordsworth will now be hoping to stay in the side for this weekend’s clash against Rotherham United at Roots Hall. And he is determined to help the Shrimpers get back to winning ways.

“We want to start getting wins on the board again,” said Wordsworth.

“But this is a very tough game against a former team of mine.

“Their manager Paul Warne was the fitness coach when I was there and they look to be in great shape but we want the three points.”
