SOUTHEND United manager Paul Sturrock was delighted to see his side win away from home for the first time since January with a 2-1 triumph at Accrington Stanley yesterday.

But he felt the victory should have been more convincing.

Blues again wasted a number of opportunities in front of goal.

And that frustrated Sturrock.

“I'm delighted to have won but we should've been three up by the time they equalised,” said the Scotsman.

“Ryan Leonard and Ryan Hall both had good chances to score and Kane Ferdinand went close too before Accrington equalised with their first shot on target.

“That's football at the end of the day but I'm pleased with the three points even though we do need to start being more clinical because we can't afford to keep on missing these kinds of chances.”

However, Blues did start well in front of goal with Liam Dickinson converting a penalty in just the second minute of the match.

His spot-kick came after he missed a penalty in the shoot out defeat to Leyton Orient last Tuesday and Sturrock was pleased to see the striker hit the back of the net.

“That's exactly the attitude you want to see from your forward,” said Sturrock.

“But I was pleased with the whole team because last season we got trampled all over when we came here.

“I told the players not to let that happen again and they didn't.”
