A NEED for speed led to Gavin Tomlin and Anthony Straker joining Southend United, according to manager Paul Sturrock.

The Blues boss felt his side were short of pace last season.

And he insists the new duo will add an extra dimension to his team this time around.

“I think pace is a very important asset in the modern game and we didn’t have a lot of it last year,” said Sturrock.

“If you look at the pool of strikers we had you wouldn’t say any of them were that rapid.

“Gavin will change that though and he will therefore offer us something a bit different in attack.

“He’s very versatile as well which is good and Anthony will also make sure we are on the front foot. I have been tracking him for a couple of seasons now and I’m glad to have finally got him.”
