SEEDY Njie ended months of injury frustration by making his Southend United debut at Peterborough in the Capital One Cup.

The 17-year-old striker played the final 14 minutes in place of Elliot Benyon in attack.

But that came after he spent much of last season sidelined with a nasty eye problem.

“I was knocked out against Colchester and ended up getting a blood clot behind my eye which was quite worrying,” said Njie.

“That came after I had also had an ankle injury so it was a frustrating time for me.

“So to go from that to playing in the first team was fantastic for me and now I will keep on working hard to try and get another chance.”

Njie found out the evening before the first round Capital One Cup clash that he would be travelling to London Road.

But, at first, he did not realise it was for a competitive game.

“To start with I just thought it was a friendly so when I found out it was in the cup I was really excited,” said Njie.

“It was all much faster than I had experienced in youth and reserve team football but I enjoyed having a taste of it all.”

Njie, who lives in South London, has been with Blues for the past two seasons.

And he joined the club after being recommended by Arsenal.

“They gave us a ring and told us about a young striker we should take a look at and it all went from there,” said Blues’ youth team chief Ricky Duncan.

“He’s done trained with the first team a couple of times and I think they’ve seen he has a physical presence.

“He’s done well and it was pleasing to see him make his first team debut.”
