Tom Craddock hits home his first goal of the night Tom Craddock hits home his first goal of the night

TEN man Southend United suffered a 2-0 defeat at Oxford tonight, to make it the club’s worst start to a season in 20 years.

Not since 1992 have Blues kicked off a campaign with three successive defeats.

But, after midfielder Michael Timlin was sent off after just 27 minutes for two bookable offences, Paul Sturrock’s side were always going to be up against it at the Kassam Stadium.

And the U’s made the most of their extra man with substitute Tom Craddock bagging a second half brace to help the home-side come out on top.

Despite the eventual disappointment, Southend were initially on top and the lively Gavin Tomlin almost put them ahead in the 22nd minute when he charged down an attempted clearance from U’s goalkeeper Ryan Clarke – only for the ball to fly inches over the crossbar.

However, that was as close as Blues were to come to scoring and, just 60 seconds after the near miss, Timlin picked up his first booking of the evening for a late tackle on Oxford right back Damian Batt.

And, five minutes later, Timlin saw red after being shown a second yellow card by referee Oliver Langford who adjudged the midfielder to have tripped U’s Southend born winger Jake Forster-Caskey.

The second caution seemed quite harsh but led to Timlin being sent off for the first time since March 2007 when playing for Swindon Town at Grimsby.

Following Timlin’s dismissal, Blues reorganised with Kane Ferdinand dropping back in to a midfield role.

But Oxford immediately attempted to get on top, with Deane Smalley having a close range effort from Adam Chapman’s right wing free-kick well saved by Blues goalkeeper Cameron Belford.

Smalley then fired wide of the left post from 12 yards when he should have done better and, on the stroke of half-time, Sean Rigg’s powerful header was superbly saved by Belford down low to his right hand side. During the interval, Craddock replaced Lee Cox in the Oxford midfield and, in the 54th minute, it was the substitute who put the home-side in front.

Alfie Potter was the creator as he charged down the right wing before delivering a low, near post cross which Craddock fired home at the near post.

With Oxford now piling on the pressure, Belford then did superbly well to tip a low shot from Sean Rigg around the right post and, with 61 minutes on the clock, Craddock sent a well struck effort fizzing over the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area.

Four minutes later, Blues boss Sturrock made a double substitution in a bid to get his side back in to the game with Ryan Hall and Britt Assombalonga replacing Ryan Leonard and Kevan Hurst.

But it was Oxford still pushing forward as Alfie Potter deceived Mark Phillips with a fine piece of skill before firing a 12 yard shot against the outside of the right post.

Sturrock responded by making his final substitution of the evening in the 77th minute with Chris Barker coming on for the disappointing Anthony Straker.

However, Oxford continued to attack with Craddock having a well struck shot impressively saved by Belford before Rigg embarrassingly fired wide from close range.

Oxford were not to be denied a second goal though and it came just three minutes from time when Craddock turned Ryan Cresswell and fired home a powerful 12 yard shot to end a run of six successive defeats against Blues.

It's not the needed news that brings in the revenue for bumper gates at forthcoming home games.

King Freddie was at the fish and chip shop yesterday. Rumour has it that it's his hamstring. I'm feeling embarrassed to have a season card

Is it resposible for a skipper to get himself sent off in 27 minutes?

Not at match, but read live text...seems again that we had few shots at the goal, so what were the strikers doing? Goalie seemed to be doing ok....Craddock is a good player.
I don't think Sturrock knows yet his best team....plenty of games to go.

I agree there is the whole season yet but the signs aren't good.
32% possession? The worst start in 20 years?? No goals in how many games??? Bottom of the league???

Sturrock needs a centre midfielder now. He needs two decent strikers. Freddy. Injured or not bothered?? Tomlin not sure. And the crowd at roots hall is defo shrinking every home match.
Come on sturrock pull out a gem from somewhere and get them going.

And I think ps is right. Moshni can stay in France and rot. After all who gave him his big chance? And how many times? And this is how he pays us back.

6hrs of football no goals. Simply because we can't pass the ball without giving it away. P.S. should go now before it is too late.

For gods sake lads - calm down (Swindon lost 5 of their first 6 last year) we had 10 men last night and although wasn't great Saturday we could of won. Let's reconvene after 15 matches and assess it then. Meanwhile get behind the boys ( I wasn't booing Mo Farah when he was last after 5 laps of 10,000 metres!! )

I guess you would want the likes of Flahavan and Barrett back too? Stop living in the past!

I wasn't at Oxford, but listening to BBC Essex, albeit with a Southend bias, it did sound that the second challenge to get Timlin sent off was soft.

There is no point in changing the manager. Any new manager may not want the current crop of players. PS has put together his squad for a reason.

Remember a few seasons ago when PS was manger at Plymouth. They has something like 2 points after 5/6 games and went on to win the league at a canter. Lets hope something smilar happens. This will of course require the players showing up!

Very well said mate couldn't have put it better myself, we will turn this around and we will get out of this pit of a league, I still strongly believe we will go up this season....

As I was saying, if you have been around a few decades,,,you will know, this is the Blues, relax, enjoy.....but do have a decent bet at mid table finish this season. Surely it must be seen we are not and frankly have not been ready for serious promo for some years, and probably will not be for many more. Just enjoy. Nothing's changed.

Barnet Shrimper is right. We are a mid-table (I hope) side and fans should not expect anything more at present. Had we won promotion, serious money would have had to be spent and there is none, so we are better staying put.
It would be nice to see some youngsters being given a chance, and to see some passing and ball skills such as we saw from Crewe in the play-offs. Our style of hit and hope is not much use when we have no target man, and no recognised goal scorers who are fit and/or in form.

The worrying thing now is, that potential signings may be reluctant to join a team bottom of the Football League.

It is clear we need at least one holding midfielder. Why was Kalala released with no replacement lined up? Both Timlin and Ferdinand push forward and not disciplined enough to
shield the defence.

I do not watch the youth team play, but I am presuming they play a more cultured game under Ricky Duncan, stretching back to the Tilly days. Therefore if they get thrown into first team duty, how are they likely to cope with the Hoofball played under PS?

After a good first half of the season last term, opposition teams soon found a way to combat our style in the second half of 2011-12. Therefore it will probably be even easier for them to cope with the same system this time round.

Crewe and Swindon deservedly both proved that promotion is achievable by playing football on the floor.

It is only two games into the season. No need to panic....yet, but worrying all the same.

Yes, it is very early in the season and there is plenty of time to turn it around. Southend could yet have a great season and Sturrock could get 104 points as he did with Plymouth. My concern is the negative standard of play and tactics. I see that Sturrock played the same system last night as he did at Gillingham last season with Ferdindand supporting the main striker and playing midfield when we didn't have possession. Ferdinand is a good defensive midfield player. That is it. As at Gillingham last season he dropped Hall, our most if not only creative player. Ryan may not be playing out of his skin this season but we must play our best team and that means playing Ryan. I can't see Southend playing attractive football under Sturrock. That is why I want him out not because of results which may improve.
