SEEDY Njie continued his fine start to the season by scoring twice for Southend United’s under-18 side in their 4-2 win over Aldershot Town at Boots and Laces on Saturday.

Njie, who made his first team debut for Blues in the Capital One Cup at Peterborough United earlier on this month, bagged a well-taken brace.

And that was enough to earn his team’s first win of the season, much to the delight of manager Ricky Duncan.

“We got four cracking goals and Seedy got two of them, so I’m happy with that,” said Duncan.

“We came in to the game after two defeats and I’m not used to that.

“I worked these lads really hard this week, probably harder than they’ve ever had to work before.

“But we got the result we deserved and now we’ll be working even harder this week to help us win again.”

Blues opened the scoring in the wet conditions after just three minutes when Jack Payne set up skipper Jack Edwards and he skilfully lofted the ball over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The lead was short-lived though as, just nine minutes later, the Shots drew level as Josh Banton and Aaron Tatham failed to deal with a long ball down the middle and it was worked out the right-hand side, where Aldershot’s diminutive wide man slammed his shot unstoppably past Ted Smith and into the top right-hand corner.

However, five minutes later, Southend were back in front when Payne found Njie and he powered past a defender before firing home.

The young striker then headed Harry Jeffrey’s cross against the post before Payne was also denied by the same upright. B

ut, in stoppage time, Southend finally made it 3-1 when Payne diverted a driven centre from Mitchell Pinnock into the back of the net.

Aldershot instantly replied to make it 3-2 with a precise close range finish just before the break, but the second half was far more sedate.

Pinnock forced the Shots keeper to make a remarkable one-handed parried stop at his near post from a fierce shot in the 70th minute but, 10 minutes later, and from another move down the left flank, Blues made it 4-2.

This time Rob Hyams was the instigator, delivering an immaculate cross onto the head of Njie, who nodded decisively into the bottom left-hand corner.

Blues will now be hoping for more of the same when they host AFC Bournemouth at Boots and Laces this Saturday, kick-off 11.30am.
